Marcus Antonius Jansen is known for his gritty urban УlifescapesФ and is concidered by many art critics a leader in Modern Expressionism. He is noted in Who''s Who in American Art publication, Famous 100 Contemporary Artists book, Sweden and listed in the Flavio Puviani-International Encyclopedia Dictionary of Modern & Contemporary Art Ferrara/Italy. His work as been requested by Colleges such as the Visual Research Dept. LibraryТs, at the California College of Art, San Francisco and he is a member of the Artists Rights Society in New York City.
The native of New York City, now Southwest Florida resident, had his first exhibition in 1974 at New YorkТs Park Avenue Lever House at age six. Over 30 years have passed for this painter who managed to convert his life from a Gulf War Soldier to transforming ordinary and often forgotten urban areas into lasting icons.. Jansen has become a key influence in a growing dimension of Urban-Contemporary artists on the internet and contemporary artscene that is quickly changing the face of traditional and non traditional art and visual media. The Paris Magazine Zurban, named Jansen right alongside Robert Rauschenberg and Jean Michel Basquiat in 2006. "What used to be the fields for Van Gogh, is for my generation the urban enviroment" says Jansen. The recently crowned УNew Artist of the YearФ 2005 by the Alliance for the Arts, has been juxtaposing sophisticated, complex and culturally as well as socially inspiring works since his military discharge. Jansen has traveled extensively to places such as Italy, Spain, France, UK, SW and SE Asia and lived in different parts of Europa since a young age including over 15 years in Germany where he sudied at the Berufsfachschule fuer Gestaltung (Design) and the Berufschule fuer Maler (Painters) in Moenchengladbach. He was commissioned by Ford Motor Company as their Centennial artist in 2003. Jansen, is referred to in Paris France as the American "Pope" of Urban Expressionism and has exhibits in respected Galleries, Museums such as recently the Tampa Museum of Art as a winner of the under/CURRENT/over/VIEW 8 Biennial and has his permanent Jansen Gallery located in the heart of Paris France Le Marais art district the American Art Gallery
Southwest Florida resident and internationally acclaimed artist Marcus Antonius Jansen was selected for the VIII Biennial Contemporary Art "Dialogues" starting August 4 - 14. 2007 at the MANEGE in St. Petersburg Russia. The MANEGE Central Exhibition Hall possesses a comprehensive collection of Contemporary art works, and hosts over 2000 art pieces. This is the result of the hall''s fifteen-year activities. The collection was started in 1991 and has been since formed as the fund of the future St. Petersburg Museum of Contemporary Arts.
