New York Dolls-New York Doll

Director Greg Whitely, with his wife, Erin, readies for a press day at the Sundance Festival headquarters at the Marriott, also the site for many a publicist HQ. His film, "New York Dolls" follows the rise, fall, and brief reappearance of New York glam-rock-punk band New York Dolls.

The unexpectedly heartwarming documentary New York Dolls memorably chronicles new a rock god -NWD bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane - become a bitter, drunken lost soul, then a committed Mormon, and then finally a rock god again, at least for one brief, ahining moment. Kane earned the "Killer" moniker for his devastating basslines, but as the film opens, it seems like a wildly ironic nickname foribalding, whiny, powerty-stricken, middle ages schie miel. Thew early parts of NYD play off the surreal contrast between Kane''searly tenure in one of rock''s most revered and influencial bands and his later life as a Jesus-Lover whose life revolves around worship and his library clerk job. The films second half is dominated bu the reunion of the Dolls at a Morrissey organised festival in London, a poignant triumphant climax in which Kane reunites with Sylvian Sylvian and david Johansen, who playfull teases his dorky bandmate, but seems genuinety moved by the recontillation. It''s borderline adorable, which may not seem terrible rock''n''roller, but Kane is a most atypical rock''n''roller.Poignant and moving, with a ending is no screenwritten could improve on, NYD is like a best episode of VHL''s Bands Reunited ever.

I just saw New York Doll - The Movie last night. This is a wonderful story of Arther "Killer Kane" the bass player for the New York Dolls. After 30 years of painful excile, he gets back together with David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain, the still living members of the legenday New York Dolls to play one last concert in London pulled together by Morrisey.

I won''t say much about it here, because anyone who is a fan of good music and kind souls should have a go at this movie.

If you don''t know about the New York Dolls, you should, here they are playing just a couple of their songs, all of which could have been pop hits, but weren''t for the sole reason that they were before their time.

Bands like Motley Crew, Cinderella, Poison and many more capitalized on what the New York Dolls started, without adding any inovation of their own. And yet they cashed in millions on their cheap immitations of this great band.

Arthur Kane of the legendary band the New York Dolls rockets to the top of the glam rock scene. Then with the death of a band member, the group bottoms out and eventually splits up. Arthur disappears from the music scene and in a surprising twist, finds a new home... at church. Years later, Morrissey (of the Smiths) offers Arthur the opportunity to go back into the spotlight and revisit a life he thought was lost forever. New York Doll is a heartfelt story about second chances and an incredible music journey. One Potato Productions
