Ancient Future

The Shaman''s Dream Music Collective is a group of musicians, artists, and producers dedicated to creating peace and unity through music, dance, art and ritual.

Be it yoga, meditation, ecstatic dance or just the act of daily living, the music of Shaman''s Dream is an ideal accompaniment that supports the path towards wellness and joy.

In the Los Angeles living room of founder Craig Kohland, Shaman''s Dream gathered with co-founder Chuck Jonkey playing samples of his Balinese gamelan, and Kohland on world percussion. They''re joined by bansuri flute player Dominic Breau, percussionists Jim McGrath and Gilbert Levy and keyboardist Tollak Ollestad. "Offerings" originally appeared on their latest CD, Prana (Shaman''s Dream Music).

The heart of Africa can be heard in its rhythms. As percussionists, we find ourselves deeply connected to these rhythms as our spiritual path, and the means by which we receive and channel the healing powers of the drum.

For Traditional African peoples, music and their daily lives are completely united. Every song, chant, instrument, and dance includes spiritual significance, and is also linked to specific life activities, such as harvesting food, marriage, childbirth, resolving disagreements, and healing.

Shaman''s Dream Music strives to re-create this union by celebrating life through Music, Dance, Art, and Sacred Ritual.

The inspiration behind "African Dream" is our deep respect and love for the raw beauty, rhythms, and healing powers of Africa. Out of the wide variety of music we produce and play, African music is the closest to our hearts, and we have studied these rhythms in Africa and taught them to Americans for many years. Jason Hann has also toured with many of the top virtuoso African musicians.

One of the drums used on this album is a very powerful healing drum from West Africa called the Djembe, which means "gather together." This project gathers together field recordings of tribal chants, nature, and animal sounds recorded by Craig Kohland during his 1996 trip to Kenya and Tanzania, blended with original songs and grooves created by Craig and Jason, as well as traditional songs sung by African artists from the Congo, Central Africa; and Benin and Senegal, West Africa.

"African Dream" is most of all a collection of musical prayers of love, gratitude, respect, and healing for Africa, our great motherland. It is our intent that this music bring peace and inspiration to everyone it touches, and that it will allow them to hear, feel, and enjoy some of the beauty and spirit of this incredible continent.

The driving force inside Craig Kohland is the healing rhythm of the drum. He is a talented multi-percussionist, drummer and world music producer. Like his heart, he is always beating his love for life and the creative expression of the sacred.

Shaman''s Dream is Craig Kohland''s multi-faceted musical project. The music-which is beautifully ambient and world beat orientated-lends its self well to yoga, meditation, healing, and ecstatic dancing. Shaman''s Dream can take on many shapes and has involved a multitude of talented musicians.

On the recorded CD''s, Craig worked with Chuck Jonkey to produce the first 3 projects- "Breathing", "Bindu" and "Prana"- beautiful project that blend ambient textures and nature sounds from around the globe to create a vibe conducive to meditation, relaxation, and deep introspection.

On the latest CD release Craig teamed up with Shaman''s Dream band member Rara Avis to create "Kerala Dream" an incredible musical journey blending traditional East Indian music with funky down-tempo beats.

In the live arena, Craig has teamed up with Micheline Berry, founder, producer and facilitator of Zen Dancing, and numerous other musicians to form The Shaman''s Dream World Groove Ensemble, where the melodic ambience has merged with explosive world percussion to create a dynamic platform for dancing and ecstatic movement.

The purpose behind Shaman''s Dream Music and all of Craig''s creative projects is to create an environment of self-expression, exploration, healing and community.
