Todd Rudgrin and Miss Christine

Miss Christine (Christine Frka) was a member of the LA group the GTOs during the late 60''s. She was the one who recommended Alice Cooper to Frank Zappa. Miss Christine was also romantically involved with musician Todd Rundgren. After the GTOs disbanded she moved to New York. She was the topic of the Flying Burrito Brothers'' Christine''s Tune (Devil In Disguise) and (reportedly) Jackson Browne''s 1974 song "For a Dancer." Miss Christine died in 1972 of an overdose in a hotel room.


The GTOs were a "groupie group" - the full band name "Girls Together Outrageously". Their only album, Permanent Damage, was produced in 1969 by Frank Zappa. The songs are mixed in with conversations had between the members of the group, friends, and others, including Cynthia Plaster Caster and Rodney Bingenheimer. The most famous of the GTOs is Miss Pamela, or Pamela Des Barres, author of the groupie-memoir I''m With The Band. The album features songwriting contributions from Jeff Beck and Davy Jones

Miss Christine (Christine Frka) was a member of the GTO`s, a band signed to Zappa`s Straight label. She was Alice`s girlfriend and has often been credited with creating the Alice Cooper look. While is probably overstating it, the GTO`s did like to dress the Cooper boys up like full size barbie dolls and certainly Miss Christine would have had an influence on Alice.

The group hailed from the area around Los Angeles in the late 1960s. GTO is an acronym for the full band name "Girls Together Outrageously". Rundgren began his career in Woody''s Truck Stop, a Philadelphia-based group based on the model of Paul Butterfield Blues Band. However, he wanted to pursue a more pop/rock-oriented sound, and left the band to form the garage rock group The Nazz in 1967, which gained minor recognition with the songs "Open My Eyes" and "Hello It''s Me." (He later recorded an up-tempo version of "Hello It''s Me" solo; it became a Top Ten hit and remains one of his signature songs.)

В середине 70-х гитаристу и композитору Тодду Рандгрену попала под хвост прогрессивная шлея. Неожиданно для многих он выпускает диск, имя которого на несколько лет станет названием проекта – "Utopia". В состав команды он привлекает сразу трех (!!!) клавишников, но гитара его, тем не менее, не теряется в катакомбах новой музыки. Добавим к инструментарию голос, виолончель и супертехничную ритм-секцию. На диске 4 отличных трека (и лишь один сравнительно прост – "Freedom Fightters"), аранжированных и спродюсированных гениальным мастером своего дела – самим Тоддом, но самое интересное – диск записан в живую, без накладок и других эффектов. Потому класс музыкантов и самого Рандгрена становится более чем очевидным. Джаз-рок, смешанный с хардом, очень напряженный и серьезный, горячая энергетика его лишь временами остужается отрешенными вокальными партиями, в остальном он мчит слушателя по извилистым дорогам с массой тоннелей и уровневых переходов, словно какая-то адская машина. Иногда плотный инструментарий стихает на какой-то отрезок, уступая место звенящему почти в полной тишине короткому гитарному соло, рычащим ритмачам или невесомым наплывам "хаммонда". Получасовая композиция "The Ikon" выжимает из тебя последние соки структурными и мелодическими переходами от темы к теме. Благо она завершает диск, потому что вряд ли возможно вынести что-то еще после ее неистовой интенсивности. Во многом "Utopia" опережает свое время – по звуку, по философии, по плотности игры. Для меня в ней заметны тенденции далекого будущего прогрока и прогметалла – то, что стало стезей многих современных популярных команд, от The Flower Kings до Dream Theater. И если вы до сих пор не слышали этот диск, то пропустили многое, пару световых лет прогрессива, как минимум.
